“Skip” Martin III (born June 25, 1957, in San Francisco, California) is a celebrated American musician now based in Las Vegas, Nevada. Renowned as a lead vocalist, trumpet player, songwriter, and producer, Skip Martin is best known for his role as the former lead vocalist for the legendary bands Kool & The Gang (1988–2007) and the Grammy Award-winning Dazz Band. His illustrious career has earned him accolades including Platinum and Gold records, a Grammy Award for the iconic hit “Let It Whip”, and widespread recognition for his contributions to music.


Early Life and Passion for Music

Skip Martin’s love for jazz began at the age of eleven when he first picked up the trumpet. His dedication and talent were quickly recognized when he earned the title of “Outstanding Trumpet Soloist” at the prestigious Monterey Jazz Festival while still in high school. This early achievement laid the foundation for a career that would bridge multiple genres, from jazz to funk, R&B, and soul.


Musical Journey

Before joining Kool & The Gang and the Dazz Band, Martin honed his skills as the lead vocalist for the East Wind Band and later for the Mighty Generation Band. His time with Kool & The Gang brought him a Platinum record, while his tenure with the Dazz Band earned him both Platinum and Gold certifications.

Martin’s career includes the release of six consecutive Top 100 albums and two Top 100 singles. In addition to his success as a group member, his first solo jazz CD, Miles High, showcased his versatility, featuring collaborations with renowned artists such as Ronnie Laws, Wayman Tisdale, Al McKay, Ricky Lawson, and Bruce Conte.

This impactful project earned an Emmy Award from The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences – Southeast Region in 2023.
